Immigration Canada has different programs to allow foreigners to work in Canada depending on the individual’s situation:
This program was designed to address skill shortages and labour market demands in Canada. A Canadian employer is authorized to hire a foreign worker only after HRSDC evaluates the market and assures that hiring a foreign worker will not affect the possibility of employment of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
The process is composed of two steps:
International Programs:
Canada has signed different agreements with many countries over the years that facilitates the entry of foreign workers without the need of an LMIA authorization such as NAFTA, GATS, Canada-Colombia, Chile, Peru, Korea FTAs
International Youth Exchange Programs:
This program facilitates international youth (18 to 35 years old) from over 30 countries to travel and work in Canada. The International Experience Canada (IEC) opens its doors once a year towards the end of the year and allows young individuals to work for 1 or 2 years. This program is composed of 3 categories:
Entrepreneurs/Self-Employed Candidates
This program is for private entrepreneurs who wish to come to Canada temporarily to start or operate a business.
Intra-Company Transferees
This program facilitates the transfer to Canada of executives, managers, or specialized knowledge workers with qualifying relationship to the company in Canada.
Open Work Permits
This program allows a foreigner to work in Canada without the need of an LMIA in any job.
